How to Seal an Urn

Urns come in different sizes and shapes and can be sealed using different methods. If you want to permanently seal the urn containing a loved one’s ashes, you can use a silicone sealant or epoxy glue. Metal glue can be used for metallic or plated urns. Follow the specific instructions on your chosen sealant, but in general, a small bead can be squeezed onto the lid, and then the lid can be securely attached to the urn. Always let your sealant dry for at least 24 hours. For many people, sealing the urn is an emotional experience because this is the final step in the process of laying their loved ones to rest.

Can a Sealed Urn Be Opened?

A sealed urn can be opened using some force or pressure or by wiggling and twisting it from side to side to loosen the adhesive. If this does not work, a knife can be used to slice the adhesive (in the case of silicone or wax). A flathead screwdriver can help pry the lid off, but be cautious not to damage the urn. Another method of opening a sealed urn involves using a cotton swab and nail polish remover or an epoxy solvent. Soak the swab in the solvent, and run it along the sealed portion of the urn several times to loosen the adhesive.
