When your beloved furry friend passes, you may choose to keep their ashes in an urn. Sealing your pet urn depends entirely on how you plan to use or display it. However, there is no rule that you need to seal your dog's urn. It would be more practical in cases of display in case it ever got knocked over, but it’s not necessary.

How to Seal Dog Urns

Pet urns come in different shapes and sizes and the urns can be sealed in various ways. If you want to permanently seal your dog’s urn, you can use epoxy glue or silicone sealant. Metal glue can be used for metallic or plated urns. Check the instructions on your chosen sealant but in general, you can simply squeeze a thin bead of sealant onto the lid and then securely attach the lid to the urn. Allow your sealant to dry for 24 hours.

How to Open a Sealed Urn

Some urns have lids that can be screwed off. If the lid doesn’t seem to come off after applying gentle pressure, it means that it is sealed with wax, silicone, or another type of adhesive. Try wiggling and twisting the lid a few times to loosen the glue. If that does not work, you can use a flathead screwdriver to help open the sealed urn, but be careful not to damage the urn. You can also soak a cotton swab in nail polish remover, or an epoxy solvent. Run the swab along the sealed portion of the urn a few times to loosen the adhesive.
