How do I know what size urn I need for my dad’s ashes?

Asked 2 years ago

I lost my father a few days ago and I’m busy helping my mom with the arrangements for his cremation and wake. My dad was a very tall and well-built man (6ft3) and we don’t know if a standard size urn will be big enough for his ashes. How can we work out what size urn we need to buy for my dad’s ashes? I appreciate the help.

The general rule is that for every one pound of body weight, you need one cubic inch of space in the urn. Standard individual cremation urns will hold around 200 to 250 cubic inches of cremated ashes. If your dad weighed 250 pounds or more, you might want to consider getting an extra-large urn.
