Can my dog notice my pet's cremains if I keep them in a sealed pet urn?

Asked 2 years ago

My dog was recently killed in a hit-and-run accident, and I had her cremated. I've kept my pet's urn on display in my living room to remember her brief but sweet life with us. I want to get another dog, but I'm not sure how it will get along with my other pet's remains. Can a dog detect cremated ashes in a sealed pet urn?

Cremated ash generally do not have an odor. It’s unlikely that any pets at home would have a reaction to the ashes in an urn. Any reaction from the pet might have more to do with your own signs of grief than the actual cremains and urn because dogs are very intuitive and pick up on our emotions.
