Is an aluminum cremation urn resistant to corrosion?
Asked 2 years ago
Hi, I want a burial urn that will be above ground and placed in a columbaria niche open to the elements by the ocean because walking by the sea was my husband's go-to. However, I don't know of any metal resistant to the rust and corrosion caused by the ocean's saltiness. I hope that aluminium will be the safest for this. I'm grateful for any input. Thanks!

Aluminum is extremely resistant to weathering, even in atmospheres that often corrode other metals like near the ocean. Aluminum contains nearly no iron. Without iron, the metal won' rust, but it may oxidize. If exposed to lots of water, aluminum oxide film forms on the surface. However, this layer is resistant to further corrosion and protects the metal underneath.
