Can an aluminum burial urn pass through an airport metal detector?
Asked 2 years ago
Does the non-magnetic property of aluminum affect its ability to be scanned at an airport when traveling with cremains? We're holding the funeral and farewell celebration for our uncle in Chicago, where the family will be gathering, and I'm transporting his cremains from New York. Do you think I can get the burial urn on the airplane?

Many metal detectors are able to pick up aluminum. However, some airlines won't allow ashes as hand baggage and require you to pack them in your checked baggage. If the airline allows the ashes in hand luggage but not the aluminum urn, you can purchase a temporary container for the ashes and pack the permanent urn in checked-in baggage.
