Do I need a special permit to fly with ashes in a brass urn?
Asked 3 years ago
Hi, will be flying with my dad's cremains in a brass urn from Washington to South Dakota, where he will be laid to rest with family. I'm unsure how airport customs operate in terms of transporting cremation ashes that's already in an urn. Do I keep it has hand luggage, or will I need to obtain a permit? Do I even put it the burial urn through the security scanner? What do I do?

This differs from airline to airline. Some airports won't allow you to travel with ashes in your hand luggage, and the urn will need to be placed in your checked-in bag. Other airports will allow the ashes to go through the scanner, not the metal urn. You could purchase a temporary urn for the ashes and pack the permanent urn in your checked-in bag.
