What does the Catholic Church say about having cremation urns at home?

Asked 2 years ago

I've had my late grandmother's ashes kept in an urn beside my bed for many years. We were very close and this way I feel like she's still close to me. The problem is, I recently joined the Catholic faith, and I'm not sure if I can still keep my grandma's ashes in my home. Can someone please tell me what the Catholic Church says about keeping cremation urns at home? This is a real moral dilemma for me. Please help!

The newest guidelines from the Vatican state that Catholic people can be cremated, but their ashes should not be scattered at sea, and the urn should not be kept in the home. The guidelines state that the cremains should be kept in a sacred place like a church cemetery.
